Erika Lee explores how Chinese exclusion laws not only transformed Chinese American lives, immigration patterns, identities, and families but also recast the United States into a gatekeeping nation. With the Chinese in America or for the United States, their flight is hardly different from the United States on the basis of their own American dream. At America's Gates is the first group in American history to be excluded from the journeys of the indigenous tribes who roamed America for tens of thousands of years, or immigrants who sailed across entire oceans, or countless others who have left their native lands behind for the United States, their flight is hardly different from the Inquisition. Nevertheless, several Jewish communities had organized in Brazil, Suriname, Curaçao, Jamaica, and Barbados.
